The City of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (BURA) prides itself on not only improving public facilities, but improving the quality of life for the general public. Public facilities and public improvements refer to all facilities that are publicly owned, or owned by nonprofit that is open to the general public during normal working hours. These wonderful improvement projects are funded through federal grants, such as the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).
To be eligible for funding, every CDBG-funded activity must meet one of the program’s three national objectives. Specifically, every activity, except for program administration and planning, must
• Benefit low- and moderate-income persons,
• Aid in preventing or eliminating slums or blight, or
• Address a need with a particular urgency because existing conditions pose a serious and immediate threat to the health or welfare of the community.
BURA’s Public Facilities Improvements Unit work in concert with the City of Buffalo Department of Public Work to support neighborhood revitalization efforts by undertaking public facilities improvements projects necessary to provide adequate facilities infrastructure and a high quality of life for the residents. The Public Facilities Improvement unit focuses on projects which aim to mitigate any threat to public health or safety and enhance the facilities in order to improve the quality of life for neighborhood residents.
The overall condition of a facility is considered when evaluating the appropriateness of renovation and the prioritization of the public facilities improvements. In some cases, facilities that are in the poorest condition become priority candidates. In general, the Public Facilities Improvement Unit projects are prioritized to address the needs necessary to meet existing deficiencies, accommodate desired future growth and replace obsolete or worn-out facilities.
BURA has been consistently able to achieve the undertaking of public facilities improvements that include, but are not limited to, the renovations of City Parks, Community Center Buildings, City Streets and Sidewalks.
